Description
Portrait of a wild grey cow.
I photographed this beautiful furry cow on a rare snowy winter day near the town of Burley in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire in the south of England UK.
Galloway and Hereford crossbreeds are very popular in the New Forest as they are particularly hardy and I believe the cattle in my photograph to be the above breed. It is very unusual to see calves remaining with their mothers in the UK and it makes the New Forest extra special as you get to see calves roaming free, as seen in the background of my picture.
The New Forest is a large tract of crown land and today one of the largest countryside areas areas of pasture land, heathland and forest in Southern England, it covers southwest Hampshire and southeast Wiltshire. There are common rights in various areas where ponies, horses, cows and even some pigs and donkeys roam free to graze and maintain the heathland.
